ABOUT CULTURE CONCEPTS BOOKS

Intemationally known for non-fiction titles of classic quality including academic titles in adult education, food, nutrition and culture, and a special category of facts-with-humour, this all-Canadian publishing house was established in 1980, incorporated in 1985, and reverted to sole proprietorship in 2000. Since 1998, we no longer market or distribute books, but have expanded into fiction, professional editing services including manuscript evaluation, selected literary agency and book production.

HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR YEARS INCLUDE

The publication of Canada's first title in literacy education to commemorate Intemational Literacy Year 1990: Adult Literacy Perspectives by Maurice C.Taylor, Ph.D. and James A.Draper, Ph.D.

UNESCO Institute for Education, (Hamburg) appointment to Culture Concepts Books as the world English language rights publisher for their ALPHA series on literacy issues, specifically of their Alpha 94, Alpha 96 and Alpha 97.

Prior to 1998, the selection by Frontier College, Canada's pioneer in literacy "On the Street" and in the workplace, to distribute their leading titles and videos.

Oh, Vulgar Wind by Munro Scott, 1997, awarded citation by The Globe and Mail as "Editor's Choice".

The selection of The Craft of Teaching Adults (now in 3rd edition), edited by Thelma Barer-Stein, Ph.D. and Michael Kompf, Ph.D. as the primary text for the first on-line degree course in adult education in Canada. This is a continuing joint project of Brock University and TVO (Ontario's public broadcasting station), and is marketed intemationally.

Making Sense of Adult Learning by Professor Dorothy Mackeracher was the 1997 finalist in the International Small Press Awards. The award was presented for content, editing and design in education books. Second Edition published by University of Toronto Press, Fall, 2004.

In 1998, Culture Concepts phased in new services focusing on professional editing, and manuscript evaluation services. Since that time, we no longer market or distribute books.

You Eat What You Are: People, Culture and Food Traditions, by Thelma Barer-Stein, Ph.D. (2nd Edition published by Firefly Books, 1999), was awarded The Cuisine Canada Gold Award 2000, and The New York Public Library Award: "Best References 2001"
