EDITORIAL DEFINITIONS

Most of these definitions are adapted from the Standard Freelance Editorial Agreement (Schedule A) of the Editors' Association of Canada and are reproduced here with permission.

NOTE: "Copy Editing" is often loosely used to include stylistic editing and structural editing, fact checking and markup. It is not so used in this Agreement. These other tasks must be specified before any Agreement is signed. "CLIENT" refers to Author and/or Publisher.

Substantive/Structural Editing. Clarifying and/or reorganizing a MS for content and structure. It must be specified whether changes should be suggested or drafted, and whether the contract includes negotiating changes with Client. Does not include computer input, research or writing original material unless specified.

Stylistic Editing. Clarifying meaning, eliminating jargon, smoothing language, and other (to be specified) line-by-line editing on the MS. Does not include the following unless specified: input to computer, checking reading level, correcting reading level, creating or recasting tables and/or figures, or negotiating changes with Client.

Copy Editing. Editing for grammar, punctuation, and other mechanics of style; checking for consistency of mechanics and for internal consistency of facts.  Does not include computer input unless specified. Note: Copy editing does not include the following unless specified before work begins.

Canadianizing, metrication,  editing of preface or foreword or index.
